Bio Doc. WHO IS MARTIN MULL? Renaissance Man Who Reveres Painting

"Okay Boomers!" YOU Boomers may be old but WE also happen to be right that Martin Mull, a man of many talents, beloved for his quirky, deadpan comedic style. America's favorite dad, Bob Saget whose untimely death in 2022 left Gen Xers bereft. He also left a documentary film he was making about Martin Mull. Saget tells Mull he was first influenced to become a comic/entertainer after seeing him perform. This project began in 2021 as a candid, convivial interview between Mull and Saget which includes com- mentaries from close family, friends and mutual celebrity crushes. Mull was extolled as an innovative and irreverent comedienne who broke new ground from his many admirers including Steve Martin, David Alan Grier, Penn Jillette, Fred Willard and Norman Lear. There's archival footage of Mull's early life growing up in rural OH with his mother, sister, brother and estranged father. He talks excitedly about  breaking out and finding himself as an art student while at Rhode Island Design School. He discusses his  early, incredulous foray onto the stage as a singing, guitar playing comedienne. "I kind of just lucked into and fell into the other profession. It was really just an outgrowth of the fact that when I was in art school I had not made money whatsoever." Most of the informal interviewing is situated inside Mull's light filled art studio with his artworks strewn about. His paintings garnered him notoriety later in life in his late 60s & 70s. Saget was sage in his choice of a subject for his doc. film due to Mull's broad talents and astonishing life. Mull is credited for being the originator of the "mockumentary style" in his "Fernwood 2 Night" (1977) TV show which aired all 65 episodes in one season which co-starred his life-long friend, Fred Willard. The making of WHO IS MARTIN MULL doc. was sadly INTERRUPTED by Saget's passing and completed under the direction of Neil Berkeley. Sadly, Mull also passed in 2024 before the film was finished. Other passings before the film wrapped include his cherished friends, Norman Lear and Fred Willard. The decades long marriage between Mull and his third wife, Wendy, mother of his only child, is a testament to a loving partnership between two talented artists. Mull attributes Wendy for saving his life. It appears both brought out the best in each other. WHO IS MARTIN MULL? (2026) is a stirring bio/doc. of an ever evolving artist whose many artistic attributes took a back seat to his passion for painting. His realistic paintings garnered him success late in life. The movie seemed a bit rambling and unfocused in the beginning which may be attributed to Saget not having been able to complete and edit the film. It does come together in the end with poignancy for Mull having purveyed a profound meaning in his life. Well GenXers and Millenials, here's another iconic Baby Boomer to add to our insurmountable list. "Why be influenced by a person when you already are one?" (M Mull)
